Thomas Mann once named Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina” “the greatest social novel of world literature.” When reading the novel, John Neumeier was deeply fascinated by Tolstoy’s work and create a compelling psychological drama of Anna and Vronsky. Earlier Neumeier staged “Lady of the Camellias” by Frederic Chopin for the Bolshoi. Another compelling piece of Russian literature “A Hero of Our Time” was staged by ex-premier of the Bolshoi Yuri Possokhov currently the chief choreographer of SFB.
